The activities of the “prepare urban resilience strategies” initiative have commenced in Marib Governorate as part of the “Strengthening Institutional and Economic Resilience in Yemen (#SIERY) project, funded by the European Union and implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP Yemen) in partnership with Ghadq for Development. This initiative aims to promote the concepts and practices of urban resilience, support effective local governance, and contribute to advancing sustainable urban development in a city that stands as one of Yemen’s most vibrant yet challenging urban centers.
These efforts are based on an integrated planning approach and data-driven analysis while ensuring active engagement of local stakeholders to develop comprehensive strategies that reflect the realities on the ground and respond to actual needs.
The strategies being developed aim to enhance the capacities of local authorities by building their planning and implementation capabilities, improving access to essential services and urban infrastructure. They also focus on advancing sustainable urban planning practices and achieving optimal land use while considering environmental, social, and economic dimensions.
This initiative places particular emphasis on building resilience to climate change impacts and conflict-related risks, contributing to the strengthening of local communities’ capacity to adapt and thrive.
This participatory effort represents a significant step forward in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the local level and reflects a genuine commitment to rebuilding Yemeni cities on inclusive, resilient foundations capable of addressing future challenges.
