Aden- Yemen

Within the framework of the “Rehabilitation of the Fishing Port of #Aden” project and within the component of the project to improve employment opportunities for women and youth within the value chain implemented by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP Yemen) through the local partner #Ghadaq_Organization_for_Development, important activities were implemented in the field of capacity building for project beneficiaries, with the aim of enhancing their skills and increasing their opportunities in the labor market.

These activities included two consecutive workshops that were organized to approve the training curricula prepared for the project beneficiaries, as well as to approve the results of the needs assessment that was conducted previously to determine the needs of the youth and women beneficiaries.

  • * In the first workshop, training curricula that were specifically prepared to meet the needs of beneficiaries in the fields of fishing, fish processing, and marketing were reviewed. The training curricula were identified as follows:
  • * Programs for males:
    – Proper handling and maintaining fish quality
    – Fish guidance and occupational safety
    – Marine boat engine maintenance
    – Operating GPS devices
    – Principles of entrepreneurship for small projects
  • * Programs for females:
    – Preparing and preparing seafood
    – Manufacturing food fish products
    – Manufacturing antiques and accessories from seashells
It was discussed how to adapt these curricula to suit local challenges, as well as how to ensure that these trainings are effective in improving the skills of beneficiaries and increasing their chances of obtaining sustainable jobs in the local market.
  • * In the second workshop, the results of the needs assessment that was conducted previously were approved with the aim of identifying areas that require strengthening skills and capabilities. Data on the training needs of beneficiaries was collected to guide the implementation of future activities based on the priorities and orientations of the local community. Candidates were identified to train 200 beneficiaries, 100 of whom were young men and 100 of whom were women.

The workshops were attended by representatives of the Fisheries Authority, in addition to the project consultant, representatives of the local authorities in the targeted directorates (Sira, Khormaksar, Sheikh Othman, and Tawahi), and heads of the associations concerned with the fishing sector. The workshops were also attended by women and youth beneficiaries of the project who will undergo future training, reflecting the fruitful cooperation between all parties concerned.

In this context, the project consultant said: These workshops represent an important step in ensuring that the training we provide will be effective in meeting the actual needs of the beneficiaries. We thus ensure that these training curricula will contribute significantly to improving the skills of youth and women and enhancing their opportunities in the labor market.”

Representatives of local authorities and associations stressed their keenness to support such projects that provide real opportunities for women and youth in the fishing sector, and contribute to improving their economic and social lives. This project represents an opportunity to develop the local community in a sustainable manner by empowering the most needy groups.

The “Improving Employment Opportunities for Women and Youth in the Value Chain” project aims to provide specialized vocational training in the fishing sector, which enhances the capabilities of participants and provides them with the necessary opportunities to enter the labor market in an effective and sustainable manner. The project also aims to improve the economic and social conditions of the target groups, which contributes to enhancing the sustainability of the fishing sector in Aden.
