The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), in partnership with Ghadaq for Development (GHFD), held an introductory/orientation workshop on February 5 and 6 in Mukalla, specifically for Water User Associations in Wadi Hajer, Hadhramaut. This workshop is part of the project “Sustainable Watershed Management through Reinforced Governance, Resilience and Regenerative Agriculture in Yemen” implemented by the FAO in partnership with the Ghadaq for Development.
The workshop was attended by 52 members from WUAs, directors of agricultural offices, directors of districts, representatives from planning and irrigation, and engineers representing the FAO and Ghadaq for Development.
The workshop aims to train participants in implementing maintenance and rehabilitation activities for irrigation facilities using the “cash for work” methodology, to enhance the sustainable management of water resources in rural areas. The project is supported and funded by the Dutch and French governments, in coordination with the Ministry of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Fisheries, reflecting international and local efforts to improve the living conditions of rural communities.
Additionally, the workshop aimed to inform participants about the project’s objectives and implementation mechanisms, which include enhancing the sustainable management of water resources, supporting local communities’ capacity to adapt to climatic and environmental challenges, and promoting regenerative agricultural practices that contribute to food security.
It is worth noting that this project is an important step towards improving water resource management in Yemen, especially in light of the climatic challenges facing the country. It also reflects a strong commitment to achieving sustainable development goals by supporting and empowering local communities to face environmental and economic changes.
